Page Two about the Maywood Historical Group of Sidney Center, Inc.
The Sidney Center Station was renamed Maywood to help solve the
freight mix up between Sidney and Sidney Center. The O&W Railroad
(Ontario & Western Railroad - sometimes called The Old & Weary) ran
through Sidney Center until March 1957. Depot blueprints and
newspaper items revealed that the center portion of the building
is the original Depot and was enlarged and remodeled in 1917 by
adding a bowed window section and additions to each end.
After the discontinuance of the railroad, the tracks were removed
and the trestles dismantled. The long trestle was taken down in
1959 and the short trestle removed in 1961. Jess F. Howes, a local
businessman, purchased the railroad including the Depot. After his
death, his daughter, Betty Jean Hunt and her husband Bill, obtained
the Depot property from the estate. They donated it to the Historical
Group in July 1990 in memory of her parents, Jess F. and Elgia Howes
and her brother Jack. The goal of the group is to update and preserve
all historical matter relating to Sidney Center, so the Depot was
restored. The station had been abandoned for many years and was
renovated with fund-raising proceeds, memorials, and donation of
money and materials, grants and many hours of volunteer labor. << Back to Page One About Us
